Arranging Your Visit:
Contact the libraries at least two weeks in advance of a planned
visit. This will ensure that a librarian or reference personnel will
be scheduled to work with your students, that a meeting location is
available, and that computer terminals will be reserved for your visit
if required. We may not be able to accommodate a visit on a particular
day, so please have a few potential dates in mind when calling
to schedule your visit.
We recommend a 25 student maximum to minimize the impact
visits have on Western Washington University students,
and to provide more focused attention for your students. Consider dividing larger classes into
smaller groups, or selecting those students whose research needs can
only be met at an academic library.
- PROVIDE CHAPERONES
Arrange to have one adult accompany every 10 students. This ensures
that the librarian or reference personnel
assigned to your group
will have sufficient help in meeting the research needs of all your
students.
-
CONSIDER TIMING
"Black-out dates" have been established in
order to maintain the appropriate research and study environment and to assure access for
WWU students. We try to schedule visits during
low-peak periods such as intersession, and around mid-terms & finals
week.

Preparing For Your Visit:
- PRE-VISIT
THE
LIBRARY
Arrange for a pre-visit orientation. Although
not required, this visit will be helpful to orient you (the instructor)
to the library system, and the physical arrangement of materials and
services.
- SEND US YOUR RESEARCH TOPICS
We encourage you to send us a copy of your assignment and a list of
your students' specific research topics, so that reference staff can
review appropriate sources and search strategies prior to the library
visit. You may email your list to LibraryOutreach@wwu.edu, or to the
person assigned to assist with your research visit.
- SEARCH LOCALLY
Give your students a head start on their Western Libraries visit by
first using local research tools. Encourage students to fully explore
resources on their topics at your school library and the
public library,
before visiting Western Libraries.
- SEARCH WESTERN LIBRARIES FROM HOME OR
SCHOOL
Students can begin their Western Libraries research prior to visiting
by using the
Library Catalog
available on the
Western Libraries
web site. Guide your students in searching the catalog to identify books and other items
that they need prior to the visit. You might have them print out pertinent bibliographic
records from our catalog to bring to the visit.
Your students should have the following prerequisite skills:
- Know the difference between books and periodicals;
- Know the difference between a library catalog and reference
tools such as indexes & databases;
- Have used an online catalog to identify books by author, title, or
subject;
- Have used an electronic index to identify articles.
